You have successfully survived – no – THRIVED (is that a word?) your way through the first month of 2018. You should be proud of yourself! I know I am!
January is typically a time for new beginnings. We think about things we haven’t accomplished yet and new things we want to conquer. As we move into February, it is time to start DOING. Taking those baby steps that move us closer and closer towards our goals.
The same can be said for your postpartum period. Right after your baby is born you will be on cloud 9. This is the time for celebration! This beautiful, amazing tiny human that you have waited so long for, is finally here in your arms.
After a few days, things start to get more serious. You may be running on little to no sleep. You may be feeling like you have no idea what your doing or feel like you are doing a million things with no goal.
I always get super excited for the new year and then quickly overwhelmed with talks of resolutions and new year goals. I got a pretty good start to the 2018 but I’m making sure that I take time to recharge my batteries as we say goodbye to January and hello to February.
Which brings me to this month’s focus, love and self-care. Yes, I know not up there on the creative meter. But still important none the less. This month on the blog I’m going to be talking about love, what IS love and how we can create an abundance of love during the postpartum period.
.The Love Hormone
Love and the hormone responsible for those feelings, oxytocin play a huge role in how we bond with our babies and build relationships.
Oxytocin is released during sex, childbirth and breastfeeding. Levels really spike during hugs and orgasms leading some to refer to it as the “love drug” or “mothering hormone”
Oxytocin is released into the bloodstream to support childbirth and lactation.
During labor it triggers uterine contractions that open the cervix and moved the baby down down through the birth canal. During breastfeeding, nipple stimulation triggers a release of oxytocin during which signals the let down reflex which squeeze milk into the milk ducts and out of the breast to your baby. It is also the hormone responsible for mom brain.
When oxytocin is released postpartum it increases your brains ability to adapt, adjust and learn new things. It also allows you to tolerate boring, mundane activities – like sitting and nursing a baby.
Oxytocin is also the hormone involved in building social relationships, bonding, trust and love. It is the hormone that helps create that unshakable bond between you and your baby. that will become the foundation of your relationship with your child for the rest of your lives.
