essentialsguidepart1As I was talking with my most recent client, she brought up the the topic of the baby registry. She commented on the huge differences between what people and stores tell new moms they will need and what items are actually needed or get the most use after baby is born. “Had I known, we could have saved so much time without having to make stressful last minute runs to Target or orders on”

That gave me an idea to compile a list of what I as a postpartum doula feel are the absolute must haves for every new parent. The list is long so I will break it into 2 parts. The first part are items that will aid in your healing and recovery from pregnancy, childbirth and adjusting to parenting a newborn baby.

  • Heavy duty menstrual pads or Depends– There will be bleeding postpartum. Stock up and have a supply ready. Some women find disposable underwear like Depends comfortable without possibly soiling underwear, but these may be uncomfortable if you’ve had a c-section.
  • Postpartum Healing Pads– Combine witch hazel and aloe vera gel in a spray bottle.  Soak individual maxi pads with mixture, then re-wrap them. Store in a freezer bag in the freezer. Use when you need some cooling relief.
  • Peri bottle – Great for reducing irritation when cleaning after using the bathroom. Fill with warm water or some of your postpartum herbal infusion (see below) and use as little or as much as you like.
  • Intimate wipes – Also great for reducing irritation, especially after a bowel movement.
  • Breast pads – Leaking is a common occurrence for postpartum mothers. A variety of reusable and disposable options are available.
  • Nipple cream – Sore or cracked nipples are common when learning to breastfeed. Earth Mama Angel Baby makes a lovely Natural Nipple Butter, which can also do double duty on dry skin. Some parents like using simple coconut oil as a nipple cream.
  • Sitz bath herbal blend – A soothing herb bath can provide gentle healing postpartum. Many women like the premade organic blends like Postpartum Bath Herbs by Earth Mama Angel Baby. You can also lay these directly on top of your pad for added relief.

Stay tuned for Part 2 which will cover items to aid in your restful recovery and growth as a new parent!
